Data Visualization: What’s Happening to Fuveme?

Climate change is a nightmare for Ghana’s Deltas.

Studies on coastal erosion in Ghana show significant rates of erosion and exposure of coastal communities.

A case study of  Fuveme showed significant loss (about 50%) of land area over 3 years.

In broader perspective, land erosion due to rising tides from climate change is  erasing 31 meters of land per year in the Volta region alone.

This mini project focuses on Fuveme, a small fishing village in the Volta Region, which has suffered staggering rates of disappearing land mass due to rising tidal waves caused by climate change.

The Climate Crisis Font was designed by Helsingin Sanomat, a newspaper based in Helsinki, Finland.

As an open source font for visualizing the urgency of climate change in a more tangible form, it was the most appropriate design choice to help illustrate the jarring truth about What’s Happening to Fuveme.

Since 2016, residents of Fuveme have faced the terror by night of tidal waves, which destroy their homes & school buildings. & the future of the small fishing town hangs in the balance, as sea levels continue to rise.

Using the Climate Crisis Font which has several 'melting' widths & weights - a font based on sea ice data gathered & predicted from year 1979 to year 2050 - I have visualized the rate at which Fuveme's land mass has been - & will continue to be - affected by land erosion due to rising sea levels.

To unify the project under a brand identity, a logotype was designed using the Climate Crisis Font. To highlight the urgency of the matter, the most distorted weight of the font (visualizing year 2050) was chosen for the logotype.

For its creative execution & contribution to coastal climate change research, What’s Happening to Fuveme was selected & awarded as only 1 of 20 Commended Entries, out of countless entries from 56 countries in the 4th Edition of the Climate Creatives Challenege, in February 2024.
